Google
This one is probably everyone's favorite search tool right now, a product
of two Stanford graduates, it has an uncanny knack for returning the
"right" results. With a search database of over 1.3 billion
pages, it is robust and easy to use.

Yahoo
More appropriately called a directory than a search engine, it has Google
on the back end and is a wonderful place to begin a search for general topics,
popular topics & current events, "home pages" -- top level sites
in organizations, and commercial products.

Northern Light Search
Very cool, not well known. Maintains a database that includes a
(paid) special collection) Worth a look!

Altavista
My old favorite used to be AltaVista, but it is long in the tooth and
showing its age with irrelevant and outdated links. Still, I find my
self trying it frequently, although I get less and less satisfied with the
results.

In a Metasearch engine, your query is
sent to multiple search engines at the same time. Then the search
results are returned by all search engines, and, in god
Metasearch tools, the results are combined so that duplicates can
be removed and any available relevance factors can be
recalculated.
Metasearch engines let you take advantage
of multiple search engines and obtain documents that are more
likely to meet your expectations.
Try some of the Web's foremost Metasearch
engines:
Metacrawler
SavvySearch
ProFusion
Dogpile
Metafind

Here are links to locations where you can
download programs to your PC which search multiple engines from a
single query. These programs provide a quick and convenient way
to search the Web from your desktop.

There are a few places on the Internet
that excel at gathering resources for your searching pleasure.
One of the best, in my opinion, is c|net's Metasearch site called
search.com. c|net has gathered together more than 200 of the
Internet's best search tools and utilities and grouped them by
topic.
Make sure to visit c|net Central's search.com!

The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day
Saints has put a beta version of its Family Search online at
http://www.familysearch.org/
The search engine on this site covers not
only the 35 million names in the Ancestral file, and 285 million
names in the International Genealogical Index, but also Web sites
which cover genealogy. You may enter a single name, or the name
of an ancestor and their parents for very targeted
searching.
Ancestry.com
In November of 1999 Ancestry.com
announced that they have over 500 million records on their
site!
The
WorldGenWeb Project
The WorldGenWeb Project was created in
1996 by Dale Schneider in an effort to answer the ever growing
needs of genealogists world-wide who were trying to research
their ancestors. The goal
of the WorldGenWeb Project is to have every country in the world
represented by an online website and hosted by researchers who
either live in their own country or who are familiar with
their
country's resources. The WorldGenWeb Project is a not-for-profit
volunteer genealogical organization dedicated to the free access
of genealogical information by anyone in the world.
